The word 'Lau' stands for bottle gourd and 'Ghonto' means mushy curry. Basically, ghonto is a Bengali speciality in which vegetables are cut into small length thin strips and cooked as a dry curry aka mishmash. Lau er ghonto is prepared in two ways - vegetarian and nonvegetarian.
